Sonoma sits in a landscape that will keep facing wildfire. We cannot control the weather, but we can control how ready we are. Peggy will make wildfire preparedness a standing city priority, funded and measured every year — not a headline we forget when the rains come.
Clear, tested evacuation routes
Act on the city's own evacuation study — hardening key routes, fixing the chokepoints it flagged, and running community drills so every household knows its zone before an emergency, not during one.
Alerts that actually reach people
Push enrollment in SoCo Alerts and Nixle, promote tools like Watch Duty, and make sure warnings reach older residents and non-English speakers who are too often left out.
Defensible space and fuel reduction
Partner with the Sonoma Valley Fire District on vegetation management, roadside fuel breaks, and help for residents to create defensible space around their homes.
Harden homes and neighborhoods
Support the updated Fire Hazard Severity maps with practical steps — ember-resistant vents and screens, retrofit guidance, and a real path to a recognized Firewise community.

Everyday Public Safety
Safe streets, quick response, and a plan for every emergency.
Safety is more than fire season. It is well-lit streets, fast emergency response, and a city that plans for earthquakes, floods, and power shutoffs before they arrive. Peggy will make sure Sonoma's readiness matches the realities of living in the valley.
Reliable emergency response
Back strong staffing and mutual-aid agreements so police, fire, and medical help arrive fast — everywhere in District 1.

Plan for Public Safety Power Shutoffs with backup power at critical sites and clear communication so no neighbor is left in the dark.
Safe streets and intersections
Improve lighting, crosswalks, and traffic calming so walking and biking around our neighborhoods and the Plaza feels safe for kids and seniors alike.
Prepared neighborhoods
Grow CERT training and neighborhood response teams so blocks can look after one another in the first crucial hours of any disaster.
